Finds Sorting and Pottery Inking
Thursday the 28th at the Ark T Centre in Cowley 11.30 till 5.30.
We are running a final sorting session along side pottery inking.
Sorting
Sorting involves separating all the finds from a particular layer in the ground (from our Minchery Paddock excavations) and sorting them into categories such as bone, pottery and tile. We then fill in a simple recording sheet and take a photograph. The finds are then sent off to experts for more detailed analysis and dating. Its a great way to see the huge range of finds that were uncovered during the excavations.
Pottery Inking
We will also be inking all the pieces of pottery so that they can be sent to a pottery expert. Each piece gets its site code and context number written on in special indelible ink. This is a nice and simple activity and a great chance to handle some of the fantastic pottery from the Minchery Priory excavation. Inking is restricted to ten people at a time so you must let us know if you are interested in attending purely to do inking. If the session is very popular we will break the inking up into sessions to make sure plenty of people get the chance to have a go- you can always have a go at both!
All activities are suitable for completely new volunteers as all training will be given and all kit is provided. You don't have to attend all day but if you do, bring some lunch otherwise there is a cafe on site open till mid afternoon.
